General Information

Located in a central position along the lakeside roadway, Stresa is a renowned international tourist resort as well as an important place for cultural manifestations and meetings. Who for the first time arrives in Stresa has a breathless sight. Flourishing gardens, facades of majestic hotels and villas, built in Liberty style, make the lake front looking unique and elegant. Emerging from the lake waters one can see the spectacular Borromean Islands (Isola Bella and Isola Madre), where the majestic mansions of the Borromeo family were built in the 17th century, and the Pescatori Island with its narrow and winding streets, which make it one of the most romantic places on the lake (the small church dates back to beginning of 11th century). All the islands are linked to Stresa by ferry-boats.

Symbol of the vitality of Stresa is the animated Piazza Marconi at the wharf, with the neo-classic parish of Sant\'Ambrogio. To the right of the church there is the famous Villa Ducale, also in neo-classic style. Another notable destination is Villa Pallavicino of the 19th century with a large blooming park rich in secular trees and its original zoological garden. A modern funicular connects Stresa to the Mottarone mountain. It takes 20 minutes to reach an altitude of about 1500 m above sea level: the most beautiful natural balcony on the Lake Maggiore. For nature lovers, at about 300 m from the intermediate stop of the funicular in the hamlet Alpino, there is a botanical garden Alpinia with over 500 essences, unique for the typology of its plants, only of alpine origin.
